If you share your Amazon Prime membership free shipping benefits with someone outside your home, you'll want to pay attention. Amazon is making significant changes to how Prime members can share their benefits, and it might affect how you use your account.

Starting in October, the company is ending its Prime Invitee Program, which previously allowed members to share shipping benefits with one person at a different address. Now, Amazon Prime members free shipping perks will only be available to people living at the same primary address through the Amazon Family program.

What's changing with Amazon Prime sharing?

For years, Amazon Prime members could share their free shipping benefit with one other person, even if that person lived at a different address. This was called the Prime Invitee Program. But starting October 1, 2025, this program will end completely.

Instead, the only way to share Prime benefits will be through Amazon Family, which requires everyone to live at the same primary address. This change means that millions of people who currently enjoy Amazon Prime membership free delivery benefits through someone else's account might lose access.

Who is affected by these changes?

The change affects two main groups of people:

  • Prime members who currently share their shipping benefits with someone outside their household
  • Non-members who receive Prime shipping benefits from someone else's account

Amazon has stated that they sent notices about this change to customers who registered for the Prime Invitee Program between 2009 and 2015, when the program stopped accepting new members. However, the change affects everyone still using the program, regardless of when they joined.

The new rules for sharing Prime benefits

Under the new Amazon Family system, to share Prime benefits, members must:

  • Live at the same primary residential address
  • Have linked accounts through Amazon Family
  • Agree to share payment methods for household verification
  • Have a U.S. billing address for Prime Video sharing

A Prime member can share benefits with:

  • One other adult in their household
  • Up to four teens (ages 13-17) who were added before April 7, 2025
  • Up to four children in their household

What you can still share with household members

While the new rules are more restrictive about who you can share with, Amazon Family actually offers more benefits than the old Invitee Program. When you share through Amazon Family, household members get access to:

BenefitOld Invitee ProgramNew Amazon Family
Free shipping on Prime itemsYesYes
Prime Video accessNoYes
Prime Early Access dealsNoYes
Amazon Music PrimeNoYes
Prime ReadingNoYes
Free Grubhub+ membershipNoYes
Address requirementNoYes

As you can see, while the new program has stricter address requirements, it actually offers more value for household members through additional benefits like Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Prime Music, and even free food delivery benefits through Grubhub+.

Your options if you're losing Prime benefits

If you're someone who will lose Prime benefits when the Invitee Program ends, you have a few options:

1. Sign up for your own Prime membership

Amazon is offering a special promotion for people affected by this change. Former invitees can sign up for their own Prime membership at a discounted rate of $14.99 for the first year—a significant savings compared to the regular $139 annual fee.

2. Join an Amazon Family group

If you live with a Prime member, you can ask them to add you to their Amazon Family group. This would give you access to all the shared benefits without needing your own membership.

3. Use free shipping alternatives

Remember that Amazon still offers free shipping on many orders over $35, even without a Prime membership. You can combine items to reach this threshold and avoid shipping fees.
